Darrell “Shifty” Powers

I haven’t been keeping up on things recently, but I was forwarded this earlier today.

We’re hearing a lot today about big splashy memorial services.

I want a nationwide memorial service for Darrell “Shifty” Powers.

Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you’ve seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them.

I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn’t know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was at the right gate, and noticed the “Screaming Eagle”, the symbol of the 101st Airborne, on his hat.

Making conversation, I asked him if he’d been in the 101st Airborne or if his son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the 101st. I thanked him for his service, then asked him when he served, and how many jumps he made.

Quietly and humbly, he said “Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so, and was in until sometime in 1945 . . . ” at which point my heart skipped.

At that point, again, very humbly, he said “I made the 5 training jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . do you know where Normandy is?” At this point my heart stopped.

I told him yes, I know exactly where Normandy was, and I know what D-Day was. At that point he said “I also made a second jump into Holland , into Arnhem .” I was standing with a genuine war hero . . . . and then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of D-Day.

I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France , and he said “Yes. And it’s real sad because these days so few of the guys are left, and those that are, lots of them can’t make the trip.” My heart was in my throat and I didn’t know what to say.

I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in Coach, while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have it, that I’d take his in coach.

He said “No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are still some who remember what we did and still care is enough to make an old man very happy.” His eyes were filling up as he said it. And mine are brimming up now as I write this.

Shifty died on June 17, 2009 after fighting cancer.

There was no parade.

No big event in Staples Center .

No wall to wall back to back 24×7 news coverage.

No weeping fans on television.

And that’s not right.

Let’s give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet way.

Rest in peace, Shifty.

Obama: Most Secretive Democratic Candidate Ever

From Newsmax

Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign says his campaign will bring a new level of honesty and transparency to the White House. Obama proudly touts that he and Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla, passed a law requiring more transparency via a public database of all federal spending.

But when it comes to offering the public documents about his own public and private activities, Obama’s record for openness gets an “F” grade.

During the heated Democratic primary, Obama complained of the Bush White House being “one of the most secretive administrations in our history” and chided Sen. Hillary Clinton for not releasing her White House schedules.

Ironically, Obama, just days away from possibly being elected president, continues to stonewall a growing chorus of information requests for documents about his legislative, personal health, education, financing, and background — leaving many voters to cast ballots based on incomplete information. Clara Peller, American Patriot and longtime Wendy’s Spokesperson, often asked us, “Where’s the Beef?”. Ironically enough, the advertising campaign that featured Clara asking this question was in 1984.

Where's the Beef?

Where's the Beef?

Irrelevant, I know, but when was I ever accused of posting only relevant material?  I just thought it was kind of interesting.  Here’s another interesting question:

Why won’t Barack Hussein Obama produce an actual “Vault Copy” of his U.S. birth certificate? Continue reading

Desperate to win, Obama plays his own race card.

CNN’s Campbell Brown decries it.  Media outlets scream it from the rafters.

It’s the issue du jour in this abomination which has become the U.S. Presidential Election.  Suddenly, if you’re planning to vote against Barack Hussein Obama, you’re a racist.

According to the yellow leftist Corporately-Controlled Mainstream Media, a vote for McCain or somebody other than their friend Obama is akin to donning your KKK robes and cross-burning.

The media, of course, fails to point out that a vote against this Friend of Bill (Ayers, not Clinton), could not possibly be for any of the following simple, valid, verifiable reasons: Continue reading

What’s in a Name?

John SIDNEY McCain and Barack HUSSEIN Obama

I got really annoyed at CNN’s Campbell Brown’s commentary on the use of Senator Obama’s full name.  She claims that the use of the Senator’s middle name, Hussein, is race-baiting.

In part, she says,

Race-baiting doesn’t have to be and yet it is happening in this campaign. Twice this week, surrogates for Republican candidate Sen. John McCain have made a point of calling Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama, Barack “Hussein” Obama.

The implication here is clear. It’s foreign sounding. It’s Muslim sounding. It’s un-American sounding. It’s dangerous-sounding. What it is, is race-baiting. And that is what is dangerous.

Are you kidding me?  You CAN’T be serious.  “Foreign sounding”?  “Muslim sounding”? “un-American sounding”?  “dangerous-sounding”?  Are you honestly trying to tell us that using this man’s legitimate middle name, Hussein, is race-baiting and all these other terms aren’t even a smidge racist?
